Richard Burge September Message

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As summer has drawn to a close, CWEIC is gearing up for a busy and exciting run up to Christmas, after a very productive month.

At the start of the month, we welcomed a delegation from India to the Guildhall for an event on smart cities, run in conjunction with the City of London, and the now Lord Mayor Elect Alderman Peter Estlin. Alderman Estlin’s Mayoral Program for his upcoming term is based on ‘Shaping Tomorrow’s City Today’; a key element of this being smart cities, and it was thus fantastic to convene the event alongside representatives from Gujarat State – one of India’s most prominent smart development cities.

Both myself and CWEIC Chairman Lord Marland were also busy this month with a number of speaking engagements. Last week, I spoke at Chatham House on the topic of cybersecurity in the Commonwealth, discussing the Commonwealth Cyber Declaration, and the positive implications it can have for Commonwealth trade and investment. Lord Marland traveled to Malta for the Delta Summit, speaking on the opening day of the event on Malta’s role in enhancing the Commonwealth’s fintech offering. He also gave a speech at the COBCOE Conference, discussing the opportunity the Commonwealth can bring to international business.

CWEIC also hosted a delegation from the Institute of Director Nigeria at Marlborough House. A long standing friend of CWIEC, the IoD Nigeria organise semi-regular visits to London and other destinations as part of their directorship programmes. It was a pleasure to welcome such an esteemed group of business leaders to discuss topical themes of mutual interest.

Finally, two great announcements that I am pleased to share with you. Firstly, CWEIC is very pleased to announce that Meinhardt Group, one of the world’s largest engineering consultancies, have joined as Strategic Partner. A company with an already strong Commonwealth geographical footprint, we are excited to assist them in achieving their Commonwealth business goals. Secondly, I hope you will join me in wishing the very best of luck to our brilliant CommonwealthFirst Export Champion Shalom Lloyd, after receiving a nomination for her company Naturally Tribal in the category of ‘Best Ethical Brand SME Exporter’ at the upcoming Telegraph Trade Awards.
