The Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) warmly congratulates Lieutenant General Ed Davis CB CBE on his appointment as the next Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in the UK Parliament. His Majesty The King approved the appointment on 29 April 2025, with Lt Gen Davis set to take up the role in July.
As a result of this prestigious appointment, Lt Gen Davis will step down as Chair of CWEIC’s Gibraltar Hub. During his tenure, he has played a key role in deepening Gibraltar’s connections across the Commonwealth, supporting greater trade and investment engagement through CWEIC’s global network.
The role of Black Rod is steeped in tradition and responsibility, serving as a senior official in the House of Lords. Black Rod is best known for the ceremonial duty of summoning MPs to the State Opening of Parliament, but also holds an important administrative role in managing the operations of the Lords and ensuring the security of Parliament.
A former Governor of Gibraltar and Commandant General of the Royal Marines, Lt Gen Davis brought deep leadership experience and Commonwealth commitment to his time with CWEIC.
We thank him sincerely for his contribution and wish him every success as he embarks on this new chapter.
