During his recent visit to Nassau, Lord Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), sat down with The Tribune to discuss The Bahamas’ strategic role in global trade.
In the interview, Lord Marland emphasised that The Bahamas is uniquely positioned to become a key conduit for trade between Commonwealth nations, the UK, and the United States, particularly in light of shifting global supply chains and renewed tariff tensions. He pointed to the country’s robust port infrastructure, attractive tax regime, and proximity to major markets as significant competitive advantages.
“As companies look to diversify away from traditional trade routes, The Bahamas has an opportunity to present itself as a gateway between the Americas and the wider Commonwealth,” he noted.
The discussion also touched on the importance of regional collaboration, the opportunities presented by the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua & Barbuda in 2026, and CWEIC’s ongoing efforts to support small states in leveraging their unique strengths for long-term economic growth.
