On Thursday 18 July, the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) was pleased to support the Maldives–UK Business Forum in London, hosted by the Government of Maldives.
CWEIC convened a number of Strategic Partners and Commonwealth business community representatives from our global network to attend, and CWEIC’s Chairman, Lord Marland , was honoured to deliver remarks alongside His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The Forum, part of a global series led by the Maldivian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, highlighted the country’s strategic investment priorities across five sectors: creative industries, digital transformation, renewable energy, fisheries and ocean innovation, and tourism infrastructure. President Muizzu outlined his government’s vision to build a more resilient and diversified economy, underpinned by robust reforms—including a new Foreign Investment Act and the reactivation of Special Economic Zones.
A central moment of the event was the official launch of the Maldives’ new fisheries promotion brand, From Maldives. The initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to sustainable, line-caught fishing and aims to position Maldivian seafood as a premium export product in global markets.
In his speech, Lord Marland commended the President’s clear and compelling investment vision:
“Your vision is remarkable. It sets out with great clarity the opportunities for development in a nation with a respected legacy of hospitality, safety, and sustainability. In an uncertain world, it is heartening to see such a strong, forward-looking national agenda.”
Lord Marland also praised the Maldives’ leadership on climate change, noting that “the Maldives has made climate resilience a national priority, and this is to be applauded.” He further emphasised the importance of engaging young populations and sharing expertise across Commonwealth markets:
“You are providing a very clear future for your youth. We, as a Commonwealth network, are ready to support this vision and the opportunities it presents for business.”
The Forum included an interactive dialogue session where investors engaged directly with four Maldivian Cabinet Ministers:
-
Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs
-
Mr Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment
-
Mr Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries
-
Mr Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development and Trade
The ministers offered detailed insights into sectoral priorities, investment incentives, regulatory reforms, and sustainability efforts.

With the new investment law in place and a sharpened focus on economic diversification, the Maldives stands ready to welcome global partners.
As a long-standing Strategic Partner of CWEIC, the Maldives continues to play an important role within the Commonwealth business community. We look forward to supporting further engagements and initiatives aligned with the country’s ambitious development agenda.
