Government of Lagos State

Lagos State, situated on Nigeria’s Atlantic coast, is the country’s leading centre for commerce and industry and one of Africa’s most dynamic economic hubs. With an estimated GDP of over US $250 billion, Lagos contributes close to 30 per cent of Nigeria’s total output, despite accounting for only around 10 per cent of the national population. Its strategic position on the Atlantic makes it a vital gateway for regional and international trade, anchored by Nigeria’s busiest ports—Apapa, Tin Can Island and the new Lekki Deep Sea Port—which handle the majority of the country’s imports and exports.
The state is also a major centre for financial services, manufacturing, and energy, while its thriving technology, creative and entertainment industries are gaining increasing global recognition. With a metropolitan population exceeding 16 million and expanding rapidly, Lagos is one of the world’s fastest-growing megacities. Its youthful and entrepreneurial demographic underpins the state’s reputation as a hub of innovation, investment, and opportunity, playing a pivotal role in advancing both Nigeria’s and the wider Commonwealth’s trade and growth ambitions.
